Apple’s iOS 18.1 developer preview introduces an AI-powered feature that allows users to record and transcribe phone calls, as reported by MacRumors. Users with access to the beta can simply tap the new “record” button in the top-left corner of the call screen to start recording the audio.
Once enabled, all callers will hear a message saying, “This call will be recorded.” The Phone app will then record the call and automatically create a transcription, which will appear in the Notes app. Additionally, users can access the full audio recording and an AI-generated summary of the call in the Notes app.
Apple first demonstrated phone call recording at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June. This feature is useful for journalists conducting phone interviews and can also be helpful for remembering important details from calls, such as those with a doctor.
Other Apple Intelligence features in the iOS 18.1 developer beta include natural language search in photos, email summaries in the Mail app, and an updated Siri design. Although an AI-enhanced Siri is not yet available, Bloomberg reports this upgrade may arrive in 2025.
